MBE Employee Recognized for Community Service
SAN DIEGO, March 27, 2008 – Local resident Skip Tarr was recently named a finalist for the prestigious UPS® Jim Casey Community Service Award. An employee of Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. (MBE), a UPS subsidiary, headquartered in San Diego, Tarr was among 15 finalists worldwide who were recognized for outstanding volunteer service in their communities. Including its subsidiaries, UPS employs more than 425,000 people throughout the world.
Following the tragic death of his son, a 17-year-old student at a local alternative high school, Tarr established the Jonathan Tarr Foundation to recognize the potential and reward the determination of a population of San Diego County students not normally targeted for academic assistance. The foundation provides scholarships to graduating seniors at San Diego’s continuation, charter, independent or alternative high schools and assists them with seeking other financial assistance.
"Skip’s actions following the loss of his son exemplify his basic selfless nature and ability to turn tragedy to hope," said MBE President Stuart Mathis. "Rather than allowing his grief to paralyze him, he turned it into an opportunity to honor the life of his son in a way that will touch many lives for many years to come. We couldn’t have honored a more worthy recipient."
Since 1999, the Jonathan Tarr Foundation has awarded over $156,000 in scholarships to over 190 students, many of whom are immigrants, showing them that someone is willing to invest in their future and that they, too, can pursue the "American Dream."
Tarr expressed his honor at being recognized as a finalist of the community service award. "I read about the Jim Casey Award recipients every year - it’s so impressive what they do. To be considered in that company is unbelievable."
As for the future of the Jonathan Tarr Foundation, Tarr plans to administer the organization as long as he is able. His hope is that one day a scholarship recipient will take over the foundation and maintain it for future generations.
